It was triple gold for the University of Nottingham women last week in the European Universities Table Tennis Championships 2023. held in Olomouc, Czech Republic from 3-10 July. The event attracted 29 teams from countries all over Europe including Nottingham Trent University, University of Bristol and the University of Nottingham.
In the women’s team event, Jasmin Wong, Denise Payet and Meng Jiaqi (pictured above with coach Kelly Sibley) smashed through their group winning 3:0, 3:0 and 3:1 against the Universities of Porto (Por), Warsaw (Pol) and Tours (Fra) respectively. They then beat the University of Ljubljana (Slo) 3:1 in the quarter-finals, Wroclaw University of Economic (Pol) 3;1 in the semi-finals and finally the University of Zagreb (Cro) 3:1 in the final.
Gold also for the pairing of Meng Jiaqi and Denise Payet in the Women’s Doubles event, with a 3:0 win in the final over Anna and Katarzyna Wegrzyn (Pol) from the Wroclaw University of Economic.
In the singles event, Meng Jiaqi, who played in China before coming to university in Nottingham to study management psychology, lifted her third gold of the event with a 3:2 win over Zdena Blaskova of the University of Ostrava (Cze).
Proud coach, Kelly Sibley, said: “I’m extremely proud of what the girls have achieved this competition. Coming into the championships we felt like we had a chance of winning a medal however what they have achieved is a dream come true. They have had an incredible year and this really is the perfect ending to a fantastic season. I would also like to thank the university of Nottingham for their continued support. It really is one big team effort and I couldn’t be happier for everyone involved”
