Atlético Madrid is reportedly close to finalizing their first summer signing, with an agreement in principle reached for Spanish national team defender Alejandro Grimaldo. Despite not having played in La Liga for a decade, the 30-year-old left-back, currently part of Luis de la Fuente’s squad for the World Cup, is set to join Atlético from Bayer Leverkusen for approximately €20 million, according to Fabrizio Romano.
This move comes after Real Madrid unexpectedly acquired two players who were reportedly on the verge of signing with Atleti: Bernardo Silva and Marc Cucurella. However, Grimaldo’s transfer now appears to be moving forward, with all parties, including Bayer Leverkusen, agreeing on a fee exceeding €20 million, including bonuses. Grimaldo joined Bayer Leverkusen on a free transfer in 2023 from Benfica. Prior to that, he was a part of FC Barcelona B’s squad from 2011 to 2015.
While Grimaldo may not have been Atlético’s initial top target, his profile aligns well with the team’s needs. Described as a versatile player, he has proven to be a significant offensive threat from defense. According to AS, he has been the highest-contributing defender to goals (14 goals scored, 12 assists) over the past three years across Europe’s top five leagues.
