It’s undeniable that Avatar: The Way of Water was a massive box office success, ranking among the highest-grossing films of all time. However, the question of whether future installments in the saga can maintain such record-breaking performance remains pertinent, especially given the colossal production costs. This naturally raises questions about Disney’s commitment to Avatar 4 and Avatar 5, despite initially announced release dates that could still shift.
James Cameron himself previously indicated that Avatar 4 was “very probable” and that he saw “nothing” preventing him from making both Avatar 4 and Avatar 5, even while acknowledging some uncertainty about the franchise’s future beyond these two films.
More recently, in an interview with Inverse, producer Rae Sanchini provided clarification, stating that the next two films are indeed in active development, with intensive work underway on planning, scheduling, and budgeting. She affirmed: “Right now, we’re figuring out the timeline. We’re working hard on that right now, building the budget, the schedule, the planning, building our new pipeline for them. As far as we’re concerned, we’re moving full speed ahead.”
It’s true that for productions of this magnitude, and given their relatively early pre-production phase, the initially targeted release dates of 2029 and 2031 might seem optimistic. Sanchini herself concurs, labeling them “tentative” and promising more definitive dates “in the not-too-distant future.”
Despite these potential calendar adjustments, Sanchini concludes with confidence: “We have the scripts, they are brilliant. As far as I’m concerned, we’re moving forward.” A return to Pandora therefore seems definitively on the agenda.
