Bayern Munich Edge Past Celtic 2-1 in Champions League Clash
Bayern Munich secured a narrow 2-1 victory over Celtic in Glasgow in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie. The German champions took control through goals from Michael Olise and Harry Kane, before Daizen Maeda pulled one back late on to give Celtic hope for the return match in Munich.
Olise broke the deadlock on the stroke of half-time with a thunderous strike into the top corner after cutting inside from the right wing. Kane then doubled Bayern’s lead four minutes after the restart, volleying home unmarked at the back post from a corner.
Celtic struggled to create clear chances for much of the game but found a lifeline through Maeda’s close-range header in the closing stages. The late goal gives Brendan Rodgers’ side a glimmer of hope heading into next week’s second leg at the Allianz Arena.
Bayern manager Vincent Kompany was pleased with the result but admitted his team could have played better at times. Meanwhile, Rodgers remains optimistic about Celtic’s chances, stating: “The tie is still in the balance. We’ve shown we can be a threat, so let’s go to Munich with no regrets.”
While Bayern will be favorites to progress, Celtic’s late rally ensures the tie remains alive ahead of what promises to be an intriguing return leg in Germany next Tuesday.
