Bobby Moore’s Rare West Ham Jersey Headed to Auction Block

A West Ham United jersey once worn by football icon Bobby Moore is expected to sell for around £18,000 at an upcoming auction. The long-sleeved shirt was originally purchased in the mid-1960s by 12-year-old fan Colin Fitzgerald from the club’s groundskeeper for just 2 shillings and 6 pence (equivalent to £1.25 today).

Peter Fitzgerald, Colin’s 69-year-old brother, is now selling the prized jersey to help his son buy a house. Bobby Moore, who famously led England to World Cup victory in 1966, passed away in 1993.

The online auction is being handled by Stacey’s auction house in Rayleigh, Essex. Auction expert Dave Davies called the shirt “a real treasure,” noting it could easily exceed the £10,000 estimate. He added, “This is the first authentic Bobby Moore West Ham shirt I’ve ever come across. Given the mystique surrounding his missing England jersey, this item holds special value for fans who consider Moore one of the greatest defenders of all time.”

Davies explained that shirts worn by other football legends like Eric Cantona, George Best and Paul Gascoigne have sold for substantial sums in the past. He suggested this rare Moore jersey could potentially fetch “tens of thousands” if multiple dedicated collectors engage in a bidding war.

Football memorabilia expert Dave Alexander, who is assisting with the auction, emphasized the jersey’s impeccable provenance, stating “The authenticity is unquestionable. We could see the final price skyrocket.”
