Bundesliga Player’s Stepfather Killed in Police Shooting After Violent Rampage
Kenneth Schmidt, a 22-year-old defender for Bundesliga club SC Freiburg, is reeling from a tragic incident involving his stepfather. The man, identified as 48-year-old Christoph S., allegedly attacked Schmidt’s mother and 10-year-old half-brother at their home near Freiburg on Sunday.
According to reports, Christoph S. fired a shotgun through his young son’s bedroom door, wounding the child. He then went on a rampage through nearby streets armed with multiple weapons before being confronted and shot by police. Despite being rushed to the hospital, he did not survive.
Schmidt’s mother Samira, 47, and half-brother are receiving medical treatment and psychological support. Police say the motives behind the violent outburst remain unclear at this time.
Despite the shocking events, Schmidt bravely showed up for training with his loan club Hannover 96 on Tuesday. However, team officials have encouraged the young player to take time off to process the tragedy.
A Hannover spokesperson stated: “We ask for understanding that we cannot provide further details about this sensitive matter at present.”
Schmidt, who has represented Germany at youth levels, is contracted to his hometown club SC Freiburg but is currently on loan to second-tier Hannover. The center-back is considered a promising talent in German football.
Local authorities report that Christoph S. had prior convictions related to drugs and illegal weapons possession. The investigation into the incident is ongoing as police work to determine what sparked the violent rampage that has left the young footballer’s family devastated.
