Cambridge United Parts Ways with Manager Garry Monk as Team Struggles in League One

Cambridge United has terminated the contract of manager Garry Monk after a disappointing run of results left the club at the bottom of League One. Monk, who previously managed in the Premier League with Swansea City, departs after less than 12 months in charge.

During his tenure, Monk led the team to only nine victories. Cambridge United currently sits eight points from safety, having won just two of their last 21 matches across all competitions. Their most recent defeat, a 1-0 loss at home to Exeter City, proved to be the final straw for the club’s ownership.

Cambridge United’s majority owner, Paul Barry, expressed gratitude for Monk’s efforts but acknowledged that a change was necessary given the team’s league position. Barry stated, “We appreciate Garry’s dedication to the club over the past year. Unfortunately, the results have not met our expectations, and we believe this is the right time to make a change as we fight to maintain our League One status.”

The club plans to use this transition period to develop a strategic plan for its future, with more details to be announced in the coming week. Cambridge United has 15 matches remaining this season to avoid relegation.

Monk’s contract was originally set to run until June 2026. His departure follows that of sporting director Ben Strang, who left the club earlier this week by mutual agreement.

Throughout his managerial career, Monk has also led Leeds United, Middlesbrough, Birmingham City, and Sheffield Wednesday. His time at Cambridge United marks the end of his sixth managerial position in ten years of coaching.
