Carlsen Exits World Rapid Chess Championships; Indian Players Shine

In a surprising turn of events, Magnus Carlsen has withdrawn from the 2024 World Rapid Chess Championships in New York following a dispute over the dress code. The five-time world champion refused to change out of jeans after being fined $200, leading to his exclusion from round 9 and subsequent withdrawal from the tournament.

Meanwhile, Indian players have risen to prominence in the standings. Arjun Erigaisi shares the lead in the Open championship with Volodar Murzin, Jan-Krzysztof Duda, and Alexander Grischuk, all scoring 7 points after 9 rounds. In the Women’s division, Harika Dronavalli and Koneru Humpy have surged to the top alongside Ju Wenjun with 6.5 points after 8 rounds.

Carlsen expressed frustration with FIDE, stating he was “tired” of the organization and unwilling to compromise on the dress code issue. FIDE defended its position, emphasizing that dress code regulations apply equally to all participants and are designed to ensure professionalism.

As the tournament progresses, other Indian players like R Praggnandhaa and Raunak Sadhwani remain within striking distance of the leaders in the Open championship. The rapid portion of the event concludes on December 29, with the blitz competition scheduled for December 31 and January 1.

Chess enthusiasts can follow the action via livestream on the official FIDE YouTube channel.
