Chelsea Secures Promising Saint-Etienne Midfielder Mathis Amougou in Surprise Deal
Chelsea Football Club has reportedly struck an agreement to acquire young French midfielder Mathis Amougou from Saint-Etienne. However, the 19-year-old talent is expected to be loaned out immediately after completing his move to Stamford Bridge.
According to reports, Chelsea has agreed to pay over £10 million to sign Amougou from the French club. The teenager joined Saint-Etienne’s youth setup in 2021 and broke into the first team two years later, making 19 appearances so far.
While yet to score or assist at the senior level, Amougou has shown promise, earning seven caps for France’s Under-19 national team. Upon finalizing his transfer to Chelsea, the midfielder is likely to be loaned to RC Strasbourg for the remainder of the season.
Strasbourg has close ties with Chelsea through their shared ownership under Todd Boehly’s BlueCo group. The French club currently has two Chelsea players on loan – goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic and midfielder Andrey Santos.
As the January transfer window nears its conclusion, Chelsea may also see some outgoing moves. Forward Joao Felix is reportedly close to joining AC Milan on loan, with the Italian side set to pay a £5 million loan fee.
Additionally, Aston Villa has expressed interest in signing Chelsea defender Axel Disasi, though a deal appears unlikely at this stage. Tottenham had also inquired about the center-back but are not expected to complete a transfer.
The surprise swoop for Amougou showcases Chelsea’s continued focus on recruiting young talent with potential for the future. While he may not feature for the first team immediately, the Blues clearly view the French midfielder as a promising long-term prospect worth investing in.
