Diogo Dalot: Amorim’s harsh criticism was a turning point for Manchester United

Manchester United defender Diogo Dalot has revealed that manager Ruben Amorim’s blunt assessment of the team as “the worst ever” served as motivation to improve their performances.

Following a 3-1 home defeat to Brighton two weeks ago, Amorim harshly criticized the squad, calling them the worst Manchester United team in history. While the comments stung at the time, Dalot believes they had a positive impact.

“The message I took from it was that I needed to show in the next training session that I don’t want to be part of the worst Manchester United team in history,” Dalot said. “You can view it negatively, but I see it as positive because it made us want to change the situation.”

Since Amorim’s stern words, United have won three consecutive matches for the first time this season. Their most recent victory was a 2-0 win over FCSB in Bucharest to secure third place in their Europa League group.

Dalot praised Amorim’s passionate approach, saying: “He’s a passionate guy, both as a player and now as a manager. I think that’s what this club needs. The fans always show their desire for the club to be the best, and that’s what he wants too.”

The 25-year-old Portuguese defender believes Amorim’s honesty and determination to turn around the fortunes of the struggling club have been crucial. “If we want to win and get this club back to where it belongs, we need to follow his lead,” Dalot added.

While acknowledging that the tactical changes under Amorim have been challenging at times, Dalot is optimistic about the team’s progress. “You can already see that we’re getting better and improving,” he said. “Football is unpredictable, but we’re trying to be more consistent and win more games.”

Dalot emphasized the importance of unity during this difficult period: “We know this storm everyone is talking about will pass. But we need to suffer as a team and as a club. The fans need to stick with us, and I’m sure we’ll rise again.”

With renewed confidence after their recent wins, Dalot and his teammates are now focused on continuing their positive momentum as they prepare to face Crystal Palace in their next Premier League match.
