Dougie Freedman has left his position as sporting director at Crystal Palace to join Al-Diriyah, a second-tier club in Saudi Arabia.
Crystal Palace announced Freedman’s immediate departure, stating he is taking on a role overseas.

He is expected to become the sporting director of Al-Diriyah, the recent champions of Saudi Arabia’s second division.
Last year, Freedman was close to joining Newcastle, which is partly owned by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.
However, Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish convinced him to stay at Selhurst Park.
Freedman was also considered by Manchester United as a potential head of recruitment under Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
After playing for Palace for eight years since 2000, Freedman made 320 appearances for the club. He also managed the team for a season in 2011.
Before becoming a sporting director, Freedman also managed Bolton and Nottingham Forest.
He returned to Crystal Palace as sporting director in 2017 and is recognized for the signings of players like Conor Gallagher, Marc Guehi, and Michael Olise.
Freedman was also key in the appointment of manager Oliver Glasner last year.
It is believed that Freedman was frustrated by budget limitations during the January transfer window.
Crystal Palace is currently 12th in the Premier League, above Manchester United. The club confirmed Freedman’s departure in an online statement.
Steve Parish commented, “Dougie has been vital in our progress over the last eight years and had a significant impact prior to that as a manager and player. I have greatly enjoyed working with him and wish him success in the future. Dougie has built a strong sporting department that will continue to improve.”
Freedman stated, “I thank Steve Parish, the owners, staff, managers, and players during my time here. I have enjoyed learning and working with you all. It has been an honor to represent the club, and I am proud of our achievements with the Chairman’s support. I believe the club has a talented squad and a great manager, providing a solid foundation for future success.”
He added, “Finally, thank you to the fans for your constant support, especially in welcoming new players and Academy graduates. Crystal Palace will always be in my heart, and I will follow the club’s progress closely.”
