Ex-Man United Star Depay Apologizes After Drunk Driving Sentence

Former Manchester United forward Memphis Depay has issued a public apology after receiving a suspended prison sentence for drunk driving in Monaco last August.

The Dutch international, now playing for Brazilian club Corinthians, was stopped by police while driving his Rolls Royce over the legal alcohol limit. A Monaco court handed Depay a four-month suspended jail term and €8,500 fine earlier this week. He has also been banned from driving in Monaco for two years.

In a social media post, the 30-year-old Depay took full responsibility for his actions, stating: “Last summer during my vacation in Monaco, I made a mistake and decided to drive home after having drinks at a restaurant. I should have taken a taxi instead. I want to apologize and take full responsibility for my actions. 2024 was a year of lessons, and I will definitely learn from this one. In 2025 we will do better.”

Depay, who joined Manchester United in 2015 for £25 million, struggled to make an impact at Old Trafford before reviving his career at Lyon, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid. Despite his club struggles, he has been a consistent performer for the Netherlands national team, scoring 46 goals in 98 appearances.

The player now has two weeks to appeal the court’s decision. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible behavior for high-profile athletes both on and off the field.
