Ensure Meta Cannot Use Your Instagram Posts to Create AI-Generated Deepfakes

July 11, 2026Pablo Navarro1 мин

Meta has made a subtle but significant change on Instagram, now utilizing your photos to generate AI-powered content. This means your images could potentially be used by anyone to create AI-generated depictions of you. The potential for misuse, especially concerning deepfakes, is substantial, though it appears to be a secondary concern for Meta.

This feature was activated without explicit user consent. If you wish to opt out, you must actively unsubscribe, rather than the platform defaulting to user privacy. Fortunately, the American actors and artists union, SAG-AFTRA, has recognized this issue and is providing guidance to help you prevent Meta from using your photos for AI-related purposes.

The good news is that opting out is straightforward and takes approximately 30 seconds.

Here's how to do it:

  • Open Instagram and tap on your profile picture (bottom right).
  • Tap on the three lines (☰) in the top right corner.
  • Scroll down and select "Sharing and Replies".
  • Look for the option: "Allow people to reuse your content on Instagram and with Meta AI features."
  • Disable both toggles for Posts and Reels. That's it!

By following these steps, Meta will no longer be able to permit others to use your photos and images to generate AI-created visuals. It's important to note that this setting only affects future content, not images that have already been created. So, act quickly to protect your privacy.
