Gary Lineker Playfully Teases Alan Shearer About Newcastle’s Trophy Drought

BBC presenter Gary Lineker couldn’t resist poking fun at his colleague Alan Shearer over Newcastle United’s lack of silverware during the former striker’s playing career. The amusing exchange took place during a recent episode of Match of the Day.

Lineker brought up a clip from 2007, when Shearer had just joined the show as a pundit after retiring from professional football. In the footage, Lineker playfully highlighted how Shearer had consistently predicted Newcastle’s imminent success over the years, only for those hopes to be dashed repeatedly.

The host quipped, “I suppose it would be typical if this is the year they finally do it, now that you’ve retired?” Shearer ruefully admitted, “I’ve been saying it might be our year for the past decade or more.”

Viewers were highly entertained by Lineker’s gentle ribbing, with many praising his quick wit and timing. One fan commented, “Lineker never misses an opportunity for a well-placed jab!”

The teasing extended to fellow pundit Shay Given, who was Newcastle’s goalkeeper during a particularly embarrassing 5-1 FA Cup defeat to Birmingham City in 2007. Shearer jokingly blamed the heavy loss on Given’s presence between the posts, to which the former keeper responded with good humor.

While the exchange was all in good fun, it served as a poignant reminder of Newcastle’s long-standing struggles to secure major trophies, despite the passion and dedication of players like Shearer during his decade-long stint with his hometown club.
