George Russell Secures Austrian Grand Prix Pole After Verstappen’s Crash and Avoids Double Yellow Flag Penalty

George Russell has claimed pole position for tomorrow’s Austrian Grand Prix following a dramatic and controversial qualifying session. Russell’s achievement came after Max Verstappen crashed out, losing control of his car on a high-speed downhill section before the penultimate corner and colliding with the barriers.

Russell, who was following Verstappen, did not slow down as much as anticipated because a single yellow flag had initially been shown. Antonelli, however, slowed down considerably, believing it to be a double yellow flag incident. The sequence of events unfolded such that after the initial yellow flag, the double yellow flags were displayed, but only after Antonelli and Russell had passed the scene of the accident. Consequently, Russell will not face a penalty for a double yellow flag infringement.

The qualifying results for the Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix are as follows:

  • George Russell (Mercedes) – 20 laps – 1:06.113
  • Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) – 15 laps – +0.236 (1:06.349)
  • Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari) – 14 laps – +0.295 (1:06.408)
  • Andrea Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes) – 17 laps – +0.301 (1:06.414)
  • Max Verstappen (Red Bull Racing) – 11 laps – +0.362 (1:06.475)
  • Lando Norris (McLaren) – 15 laps – +0.389 (1:06.502)
