Indian grandmaster D Gukesh has claimed the outright lead in the Tata Steel Chess Masters tournament after the ninth round. Gukesh secured victory over fellow Indian player Leon Mendonca, propelling him to the top of the standings with 6.5 points.

This marks Gukesh’s third consecutive win with the white pieces, giving him a significant boost with just four rounds remaining. Following his match, Gukesh expressed satisfaction with his performance, stating, “I’m pleased with how I played today.”

Other key results saw Nodirbek Abdusattorov draw with Fabiano Caruana in a tense encounter, while R Praggnanandhaa suffered a loss to Dutch grandmaster Anish Giri. These outcomes have reshuffled the leaderboard, with Gukesh now holding a clear advantage.

Vladimir Fedoseev also gained ground, defeating India’s Pentala Harikrishna to secure his fourth win in six games. This victory places Fedoseev just half a point behind the leader.

As the tournament enters its final stages, the tenth round will see Gukesh face Max Warmerdam, while Praggnanandhaa takes on Fedoseev in a crucial match that could impact the standings significantly.
