Indian chess grandmaster Humpy Koneru has announced her withdrawal from the upcoming 2026 Women’s Candidates Tournament, scheduled to be held in Cyprus. Koneru cited concerns over her personal safety amidst escalating regional tensions as the primary reason for her decision. In accordance with the tournament’s regulations, Anna Muzychuk has been invited to take the place of the Indian grandmaster within the eight-player competition. This significant change occurs just ahead of the event’s planned start, with recent travel advisories and security incidents in the Eastern Mediterranean region contributing to the context of Koneru’s withdrawal.
