Jaime Munguia Tests Positive for Banned Substance

Former junior middleweight champion Jaime Munguia`s victory against Bruno Surace on May 4 is potentially under threat after a post-fight drug test showed a positive result for a prohibited substance.

A representative for Munguia confirmed on Thursday that they received a notification from the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA) the previous night. The notification indicated the presence of exogenous testosterone metabolites in Sample A from the post-fight test. Munguia`s team stated they will issue an official response and plan to request the analysis of Sample B shortly.

Munguia (with a record of 45 wins and 2 losses, 35 by knockout) has a 10-day window to request the analysis of Sample B to determine if the testosterone metabolites are of external origin. Should Sample B also test positive for the banned substance, the result of his decision win could be changed to a no contest, and the former champion might face a suspension of six months to a year.

In a statement posted on social media, Munguia asserted that he underwent two tests during his training camp, both of which returned negative results. He described the VADA notification as “a complete surprise.” Munguia also expressed his willingness to participate in any “retroactive, current, or future testing to demonstrate that I have always been a clean athlete.”

His promoter, Golden Boy Promotions, has not yet responded to requests for comment regarding the matter.

The fight was a rematch for Munguia, where he decisively won by decision to avenge a surprising sixth-round knockout loss to Surace that occurred in December. The bout took place earlier this month as part of a major boxing event that featured Canelo Alvarez in the main event.
