John and Brenda Romero: “The Video Game Industry Is in a Truly Horrible Situation”

One doesn’t need to be a professional analyst to discern that something is deeply amiss in the gaming world today. Massive online titles, with budgets that could have funded several lavish single-player experiences, are being canceled almost at launch. Projects well into development are being abandoned pre-release. Ultra-expensive games, whose creation spanned generations, too often receive lukewarm reviews. Players seem dissatisfied with AAA ventures, and layoffs are rampant as iconic studios close their doors.

Recently, reports highlighted that a single AAA title now costs at least $300 million to produce, implying that even sales of six million units are insufficient to turn a profit.

Now, another veteran duo from the gaming sphere suggests the current climate is, in fact, worse than the legendary Video Game Crash of 1983, which brought the industry to its knees for two years. This perspective comes from John and Brenda Romero. In a recent interview, Brenda stated:

“I feel like the industry is in a truly awful place. I mean, we were there in the ’80s for the crash, and this is definitely more of a crash. There are so few people who haven’t been affected, or their partner is affected, or they’re worried about being affected. It’s a really tough time right now.”

John concurred, emphasizing the current instability of the gaming world, making it difficult to foresee its direction. He pointed to a specific, bizarre recent development: Electronic Arts made a fortune with Battlefield 6, which sold “really, really well.” Yet, this success did not benefit the developers; instead, the reward was a wave of layoffs. John summarized the situation:

“I don’t understand what this is about.”

Nevertheless, both are convinced that people will continue to play games. However, they appear to believe that major publishers are entirely out of touch with their audience, citing discussions around AI as evidence:

“It’s really one of those moments where I just don’t know. And you hear behind the scenes, there’s a huge push towards teams using generative AI, there’s a huge pushback from teams and players on using generative AI…”

What are your thoughts? Are the Romeros overstating the case, or is the gaming industry truly facing a crisis right now?
