John Lithgow Stands Firm on Dumbledore Role Despite Activist Pressure

Actor John Lithgow, known for roles in “Dexter” and “How I Met Your Mother,” has reportedly faced calls from LGBT* activists to step down from portraying Albus Dumbledore in the upcoming “Harry Potter” television series. Lithgow disclosed this information in an interview with The Times of London.

The controversy stems from the author of the original books, J.K. Rowling, who has been an outspoken advocate for women`s rights and has voiced views that have been perceived as critical of certain aspects of transgender identity and activism. Her stance has frequently led to significant online criticism directed at her and her work.

According to Lithgow, after his casting was announced, several LGBT* activists, including a “dear friend,” urged him to withdraw from the project. They argued that the “Harry Potter franchise is associated with transphobia” and that the new show would effectively “strengthen Rowling`s platform in her crusade against transgender people.” The actor expressed surprise at this reaction, stating he doesn`t fully understand the reasoning and is keen to discuss the matter directly with Rowling. When asked pointedly if the pressure had caused him to rethink taking the role, Lithgow responded unequivocally: “Oh, God, no.”

The adaptation of the “Harry Potter” books into a series was officially announced in April 2023. The show is expected to run for a decade, aiming to cover the events of the original seven books chronologically. The creators have indicated a commitment to a detailed and faithful adaptation of J.K. Rowling`s source material.
