UFC icon Jon Jones has officially announced his retirement, a move that results in Britain`s Tom Aspinall being promoted to the status of undisputed heavyweight champion.
Jones, 37, had a distinguished career holding titles in both the light-heavyweight and heavyweight divisions. His final bout took place in November, where he secured a victory over Stipe Miocic.
Despite becoming the youngest champion in UFC history in 2011 at the age of 23 after defeating Mauricio Rua, Jones` career was also marked by significant controversies, including positive tests for prohibited substances and encounters with US law enforcement.
Announcing his decision, Jones released a statement:
“Today, I am officially announcing my retirement from the UFC. This decision comes after a lot of reflection and I want to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude for the journey I`ve experienced over the years.”
He added:
“From the first time I stepped into the Octagon, my goal was to push the boundaries of what was possible in this sport. Becoming the youngest UFC champion in history, defending my title against some of the best fighters in the world and sharing unforgettable moments with fans across the globe – these are memories I`ll cherish forever.”
Reflecting further on his path, Jones stated:
“I`ve faced incredible highs and some tough lows, but every challenge has taught me something valuable and made me stronger, both as a fighter and as a person.”
Following Jones` retirement, the 32-year-old British fighter Tom Aspinall, who previously held the interim heavyweight title, is now recognized as the full champion. This elevation follows his impressive sequence of three consecutive victories over Marcin Tybura, Sergei Pavlovich, and Curtis Blaydes.
