Key Details on the Sinner and Swiatek Doping Incidents in Tennis

The tennis world was shaken in 2024 by two separate doping cases involving top players Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek. Here’s an overview of both situations:

Jannik Sinner Case

Sinner tested positive for the anabolic steroid clostebol in March 2024. He claimed the substance entered his system accidentally through a massage from his physiotherapist. An independent tribunal initially cleared Sinner of wrongdoing, but the World Anti-Doping Agency has appealed that decision. A Court of Arbitration for Sport hearing is scheduled for April 2025 to determine if Sinner will face a 1-2 year ban.

Iga Swiatek Case

Swiatek tested positive for trimetazidine in August 2024. She said it came from a contaminated over-the-counter sleep medication. Swiatek accepted a one-month suspension, which she has already served. The World Anti-Doping Agency announced it would not appeal her case, effectively closing the matter.

Both players are currently competing at the 2025 Australian Open as investigations and appeals continue. The cases have highlighted the complexities of anti-doping regulations in tennis and raised questions about athlete responsibility.
