‘The Housemaid,’ an adaptation of the popular novel, proved to be a significant success for Lionsgate and its star, Sydney Sweeney. The film garnered over ten times its production budget at the box office and consistently received strong reviews. Given its status as a thriller with horror elements, a sequel was an almost certainty.
Indeed, ‘The Housemaid’s Secret,’ based on the second book in Freida McFadden’s series, has already been greenlit. Reports confirm that acclaimed, award-winning actress Kirsten Dunst, known for her roles in ‘Bring It On,’ ‘Spider-Man,’ and ‘Marie Antoinette,’ has been cast as Sydney Sweeney’s co-star in the upcoming film.
Erin Westerman, an executive at Lionsgate, expressed her enthusiasm for the casting:
‘It’s a privilege to bring the next chapter of ‘The Housemaid’ to the screen with Kirsten Dunst. She is an icon. Her career reflects extraordinary range and fearlessness. Opposite the always magnetic Sydney Sweeney, she will be an electrifying force in a world where nothing is ever quite what it seems.’
With Rebecca Sonnenshine returning to pen the screenplay and Paul Feig set to direct, the ingredients for another box office hit appear firmly in place.
