Koeman Doubts Zirkzee’s National Team Level

Ronald Koeman, the Netherlands national team manager, has stated that Manchester United forward Joshua Zirkzee is currently not performing at a high enough level to warrant a place in the national squad.

Zirkzee has faced challenges in establishing himself at Manchester United since his £36.5 million move from Bologna in July.

This season, the 23-year-old has only managed six goals and two assists in 42 appearances for his club.

His performances have led to disappointment from Manchester United supporters and football experts, and it seems Koeman shares this sentiment.

The Netherlands manager has decided not to invite Zirkzee for the upcoming international matches this month.

Koeman emphasized that the striker needs to “earn” his position in the national team.

Koeman explained, “He was not in the preliminary selection because I don’t believe he is currently good enough.”

He added, “Specifically, his awareness when turning or passing frequently falters.”

“While form and fitness are ideally the primary factors, it isn’t always feasible.”

“We are well-stocked in central defense and midfield, but our options in attack are somewhat limited.”

“However, even considering that, I still maintain that national team selection must be earned, and I don’t think he warrants it at this moment. This could change in the future.”

Zirkzee has been part of the Dutch national team in the previous three international breaks.

This time, Memphis Depay is anticipated to receive the call-up instead.

The Netherlands will play against Spain in two Nations League matches this month.

Winning these two legs would secure their place in the semi-finals of the competition.
