Leeds United Condemns Offensive Chants by Millwall Fans

Leeds United has issued a statement expressing profound disappointment following offensive chants by Millwall supporters during their FA Cup fourth-round match. The chants referenced the tragic deaths of Christopher Loftus and Kevin Speight, two Leeds fans who lost their lives in Istanbul in 2000 before a UEFA Cup semi-final against Galatasaray.

The club’s statement emphasized the emotional impact of these chants on the families of Loftus and Speight, as well as the entire Leeds United fanbase. Leeds has committed to collaborating with law enforcement and Millwall FC to identify those responsible for the offensive behavior.

Leeds manager Daniel Farke commented on the incident, stating, “Human life and health are far more important than any football match. The football community as a whole stands for these values and aims to uphold them.”

Millwall FC also responded, acknowledging that both clubs have experienced tragic losses in their histories. The club stated that such chanting is completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated, emphasizing that it has no place in football.

The match itself ended in a 2-0 victory for Millwall, with striker Femi Azeez scoring both goals. This marked Leeds’ first home defeat since September and Millwall’s first win at Elland Road since 2018.

Both clubs have pledged to work together and with relevant authorities to address this issue and prevent similar incidents in the future.
