Manchester United Reach Agreement with Veteran Keeper Tom Heaton

Veteran goalkeeper Tom Heaton has verbally agreed to a new one-year playing contract with Manchester United.

Manchester United confirmed on Monday that they were in contract discussions with the 39-year-old custodian.

Heaton is expected to remain at Old Trafford, with the final terms of the agreement anticipated to be finalised in the coming days.

The seasoned stopper`s previous contract was set to expire at the end of June.

However, the three-cap England international, who is in his second spell at the club having rejoined in 2021, is poised to sign a new deal that will extend his tenure at United into his forties.

He originally spent five years at the club between 2005 and 2010 but did not make a Premier League appearance during that initial period.

During his career, Heaton had loan spells at clubs including Swindon, Antwerp, Cardiff City, QPR, Rochdale, and Wycombe.

Despite his return to Old Trafford in 2021, he has yet to play a single minute for the club in the Premier League.

While a coaching role for the former Aston Villa and Burnley keeper has been mentioned, it is understood that this is viewed as a long-term possibility rather than an immediate plan.

Consequently, Heaton will remain part of the club`s first-team squad for the upcoming season. The team is scheduled to return to action for a friendly match against Leeds in Stockholm on July 19.

He did feature for the club during the post-season tour in Asia, although he made a notable error during the match against Hong Kong.
