Manchester United’s New Signing Patrick Dorgu Earns Less Than Backup Goalkeeper
Manchester United’s recent £25 million acquisition Patrick Dorgu has signed a contract with a surprisingly modest weekly wage of £40,000. This puts the 20-year-old Danish left wing-back among the lowest earners in United’s first team squad, despite his significant transfer fee.
Dorgu’s salary is lower than that of third-choice goalkeeper Tom Heaton, who reportedly earns £45,000 per week. Only reserve keeper Altay Bayindir and academy graduate Kobbie Mainoo have lower wages than Dorgu in the senior squad.
The young defender’s contract represents a major pay increase from his time at Italian club Lecce, but remains manageable for United’s wage structure. His £40,000 weekly salary is well below top earners like Marcus Rashford (£325,000) and Casemiro (£300,000).
United were unable to strengthen their attacking options in January after missing out on Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel, who joined Tottenham on loan instead. The club did manage to offload high earners Rashford and Antony on loan to Aston Villa and Real Betis respectively.
While Dorgu’s transfer fee was substantial, his relatively low wages demonstrate United’s more prudent approach to player salaries under new ownership. The club will hope the Danish youngster can develop into a key player and justify his transfer outlay in the coming years.
