Matheus Cunha Confirms Desire to Leave Wolves, Arsenal and Man Utd Interested

Matheus Cunha has confirmed his desire to leave Wolverhampton Wanderers to “take the next step and compete for major trophies.”

The 25-year-old Brazilian forward was a target for Arsenal in January, and other clubs including Chelsea, Tottenham, and Nottingham Forest have also shown interest, with Manchester United also in the frame.

Despite interest and speculation, Cunha remained at Wolves and signed a new contract extending his stay until 2029. This new deal reportedly includes a £62.5 million release clause.

Now, Cunha has publicly stated his intention to leave the club when the summer transfer window opens, echoing earlier reports that he was seeking a move.

With 13 Premier League goals this season, Cunha has played a key role in Wolves` campaign to avoid relegation. He feels his contribution is nearing completion and is ready to move to a team where he can challenge for significant honors.

Speaking to the Guardian, Cunha mentioned, “I had many offers, but I wouldn`t have felt right leaving mid-season while the club was in a difficult position, potentially facing relegation.”

He continued, “Now, we are close to securing our place in the league. I have made it clear that I need to take the next step. I want to compete for titles and achieve big things. I believe I have the potential to do so.”

Cunha joined Wolves in 2023 from Atletico Madrid, initially on loan before a permanent £44 million move. Despite a successful career, he is yet to win a major club trophy. However, he has won the Toulon Tournament in 2019 and an Olympic gold medal with Brazil at the 2021 Tokyo Games.

Beyond his football skills, Cunha is also known for his linguistic abilities, speaking six languages fluently: Portuguese, English, Italian, French, German, and Spanish.

`Wolves Brought Back My Joy`

Cunha also expressed his need for a supportive environment, acknowledging the human side of footballers. “Sometimes, all we need is affection. People assume we have everything, but we are also human and face our own challenges. We need understanding.”

He added, “Wolves helped me rediscover my joy for football. The fans have been incredible. My current status, my level as a player, and my happiness are all thanks to them. I am truly grateful to Wolves.”

Reflecting on the broader football life, Cunha shared, “I enjoy learning, but the football lifestyle is demanding. It deprives you of many things. I left home at 13 to pursue football.”

Looking to the future, he said, “Perhaps after retiring, I will consider coaching. But first, I need a break to rest, clear my head, and experience a normal life for a while. I need to live differently.”
