Jannik Sinner, the Italian tennis star, has successfully advanced to the quarter-finals of the Miami Open. His recent victory over Alex Michelsen not only secured his progression but also extended his remarkable streak of consecutive sets won in Masters 1000 tournaments to an impressive 28.
The world No. 2, Sinner, overcame his American opponent in a tightly contested two-set match, winning 7-5, 7-6. This sets him up for a quarter-final clash against the winner of the match between Frances Tiafoe and Térence Atmane. Throughout his match against Michelsen, Sinner demonstrated exceptional serving, winning 90% of his first-serve points and hitting 15 aces.
Post-match, Sinner shared his thoughts: “My serve was particularly helpful today, especially during crucial moments. I’m still working on improving my movement at the back of the court, but I’m content with battling through this match; it was very tough, and Alex played some excellent tennis. I’m pleased with how I managed the situation, particularly in the second set.”
Sinner has now accumulated nine consecutive match victories since his defeat to Jakub Mensik in Doha. The 22-year-old is now looking ahead to the upcoming clay-court season, aiming for further Grand Slam success after his triumph at the Australian Open earlier this year.
Reflecting on his approach, Sinner stated, “I try not to get overly ecstatic with wins or overly critical with losses; that wouldn’t be balanced. I aim to understand my game better, and that comes with playing more matches. Having competed at this high level for several years, I know what it takes to bounce back and what needs to be done. We’re always striving to improve; today provided valuable feedback. I know if I want to go deep into this tournament, I need to refine a few aspects. For now, it’s the quarter-finals again, and we’ll see how things progress before the clay season.”
Paul Reaches First Miami Quarter-Final
In other men’s singles action, American favorite Tommy Paul secured his first-ever quarter-final berth at the Miami Open by defeating Argentina’s Tomas Martin Etcheverry in straight sets.
The 26-year-old American took just 74 minutes to dispatch his 29th-seeded opponent with a commanding 6-1, 6-3 victory. This win keeps alive his pursuit of a maiden Masters 1000 title. Paul, a former top-10 ranked player, is scheduled to face the 28th-seeded Frenchman Arthur Fils for a spot in the semi-finals.
Muchova Books Gauff Showdown After Tense Win
On the women’s side, Karolina Muchova navigated a challenging encounter against Canadian rising star Victoria Mboko, emerging with a 7-5, 7-6(5) victory to secure her place in the Miami Open semi-finals.
Muchova faced a critical moment when she was trailing 0-30 while serving at 5-4 down, but she rallied impressively to win four consecutive points, holding her serve and leveling the set at 5-5 before ultimately claiming the opening set. Mboko pushed the Czech player to a tiebreak in the second set, but Muchova held firm to prevent a deciding set.
“It was incredibly close, essentially decided by a single point at the end. In tennis, things can change so quickly. I’m just very grateful that I managed to win the final point,” Muchova commented. “I tried to maintain my focus and stay aggressive.”
Muchova’s next opponent will be Coco Gauff, who also fought through a tough three-set match against Swiss 12th seed Belinda Bencic. Gauff ultimately triumphed with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 scoreline to reach the final four.
Gauff found herself trailing 3-2 in the deciding set but then surged, winning the final four games, which included two crucial break-point conversions, to seal her victory.
“I’m not thinking about the title yet,” Gauff asserted. “I’ve competed in enough of these tournaments to know that the semifinals are almost as distant from the title as the first round, in a way. I’m genuinely happy and proud to be here. I honestly didn’t expect this to be the year for my breakthrough here, but I’ll definitely take it.”
