Even though there aren’t any major sports movies competing at the Oscars this year, people are always debating which sports films are the best. We looked at what sports movies are searched the most in the United States. Using Google Trends data from 2004 onwards, here are the sports movies that get the most searches in America.

This classic Pixar movie from 2006 was loved by everyone and made $462 million worldwide. It’s about a famous rookie race car, Lightning McQueen (voiced by Owen Wilson), who gets stuck in a small, old town and learns that winning isn’t everything. Even almost 20 years later, ‘Cars’ is still very popular. Over time, ‘Cars’ and its successful sequels have created many online memes, bringing in new fans to the story.

Rocky
‘Rocky’ is the ultimate story of someone who starts with nothing and achieves something great. Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) is a boxer from Philadelphia who gets a surprise chance to fight for the world heavyweight championship. This movie started one of the most successful sports movie series ever. The first movie came out in 1976, but Hollywood is still making new movies in the same world, like ‘Creed,’ ‘Creed II,’ and ‘Creed III.’

Space Jam
When Michael Jordan was super famous, he joined up with the Looney Tunes characters in this movie that mixed real actors and cartoons. The Looney Tunes have to beat the Monstars (who have stolen the basketball skills of famous players like Charles Barkley and Patrick Ewing) to win their freedom, so they ask Jordan for help. The movie made $231 million worldwide and became a classic because it was fun and had a great soundtrack. A sequel with LeBron James (‘Space Jam: A New Legacy’) came out in 2021.

Released in 1984, ‘The Karate Kid’ is about a teenager who moves to a new town and learns karate from a master to defend himself from bullies. The movie was a huge hit and had three sequels, a remake in 2010, and a recent TV show called ‘Cobra Kai’.

‘The Sandlot’ only made $32.4 million when it came out, but it became a much-loved classic and people still talk about it today, even though it’s over 30 years old. The movie is set in the summer of 1962 and follows a group of kids who play baseball and have lots of adventures together.

Almost 10 years after the last ‘Rocky’ movie, ‘Creed’ came out as a modern spin-off. In this movie, Rocky Balboa (Stallone) becomes a coach and mentor to Adonis Johnson (Michael B. Jordan), who is the son of Rocky’s friend Apollo Creed who died. The movie made $174 million worldwide and has had two sequels.

Rocky Balboa (Stallone) comes out of retirement for one last fight against the current heavyweight champion, Mason ‘The Line’ Dixon (Antonio Tarver). When this movie was released, it had been 16 years since the last ‘Rocky’ film, so there was a lot of excitement for it. It ended up making $156 million.

The Blind Side
‘The Blind Side’ tells the story that was said to be true about Michael Oher, who goes from being a homeless kid to a top football player and gets drafted into the NFL, all with the help of his adopted family. This movie won an Oscar and made $309 million. However, Michael Oher has recently said that the Tuohy family never really adopted him and tricked him into a legal arrangement that let them make money off of him. Last year, a judge ended this legal arrangement.

Back in 006, a comedy with Will Ferrell was sure to be a hit, and ‘Talladega Nights’ was no different, making $163 million. The movie is about Ricky Bobby (Ferrell), who is a top NASCAR driver, and his teammate Cal Naughton Jr. (John C. Reilly). They are very successful until a French Formula One driver (Sacha Baron Cohen) changes everything.

Remember the Titans
This movie is based on the true story of Herman Boone (Denzel Washington) and his high school football team in Virginia. The team comes together after the school board makes a school that was only for white students join with a school that was only for Black students. The movie made $137 million worldwide and has become a favorite sports movie over the years since it came out.
