Sony Pictures has announced the production of a new film in the Resident Evil franchise, as confirmed by company representatives to Deadline.
Zack Creggar, known for directing the horror movie “Barbarian,” will direct the film. Creggar expressed his enthusiasm: “Being a decades-long fan of these games, it’s a true honor to bring this incredible work to life.” He also co-wrote the screenplay with Shay Hatten (“John Wick 4”).
This new Resident Evil movie is intended to reboot the franchise, aiming to bring the series back to its horror game roots. The premiere is scheduled for September 18, 2026.
The Resident Evil franchise began in 1996 and includes 29 games, including remakes and spin-offs. The first film adaptation was released in 2002. The film series starring Milla Jovovich consists of six movies and has collectively earned over $1.2 billion at the box office. Additionally, “Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City” was released as a separate film aiming to be a reboot closer to the source material, but it underperformed commercially.
