Panthers Re-Sign Mackie Samoskevich Ahead of New Season

The Florida Panthers organization has officially solidified another piece of its roster puzzle, announcing the re-signing of forward Mackie Samoskevich. The 22-year-old, who was a restricted free agent this off-season, has agreed to terms on a one-year contract, ensuring he remains part of the back-to-back Stanley Cup champions.

Samoskevich`s new deal follows his first full campaign in the National Hockey League during the 2024-25 season. In 72 games, he recorded a respectable 31 points, netting 15 goals and adding 16 assists. While perhaps not setting the league ablaze with rookie scoring records, this production demonstrates a player finding his footing and contributing offensively as he navigated the demanding NHL schedule.

His presence wasn`t limited to the regular season. Samoskevich also saw limited action during the Panthers` successful playoff run, tallying one assist in four games. It`s a statistic that, taken in isolation, might raise an eyebrow – one assist in four playoff games while winning the Stanley Cup? One could argue efficiency over volume in that scenario, or perhaps simply being part of a machine that didn`t require him to carry the load every night. Either way, he was present and accounted for within the winning environment.

Panthers President and General Manager Bill Zito commented on the signing, highlighting the organization`s view of the young forward. “Mackie is a talented young forward who demonstrated skill and maturity well above his age in his first full NHL season,” Zito stated. He also noted Samoskevich`s adaptability: “He showcased his ability to slot into any hole in our lineup and find success this past season, which is a testament to both his play and character. We look forward to seeing him compete in our organization for years to come.” Such praise from management suggests Samoskevich is seen not just as a player, but as a valuable, versatile individual within the team structure.

A first-round pick (24th overall) for Florida in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft, Samoskevich arrived in the Panthers system after two seasons developing his game at the University of Michigan. Prior to his solid 2024-25 season, his initial taste of NHL action came during the 2023-24 season, where he appeared in seven games without recording a point. A memorable debut, perhaps, for its statistical purity (zero points), but certainly not indicative of the player he quickly grew into during his first full year.

This one-year agreement appears to be a sensible step for both the player and the club. For Samoskevich, it provides stability and another season to prove himself and potentially earn a longer-term commitment down the line. For the Panthers, it secures a young, high-drafted forward who has already shown he can contribute at the NHL level and fits into their system, maintaining valuable depth as they look to potentially extend their championship window.
