Papich Reviews ‘Death Rides a Horse’

Streamer Vitalii `Papich` Tsal has shared his impressions after watching the film “Death Rides a Horse”. The content creator rated the movie 4 out of 10.

Here is his take:

“I watched a super old western from 1967 — `Death Rides a Horse`. This is one of the films that even inspired Tarantino when he was creating Kill Bill. But if you`re wondering, there are hardly any similarities. Just a moment with recognizing the villains and one track was borrowed. That`s it. Like almost all westerns of that era, the film is incredibly poorly made: terrible cinematography, no blood, and endless ammo for the heroes and villains. The plot is primitive, linear, and obtuse. It`s also quite protracted; I watched the film for over 3 days because it was boring at times. The same awful locations as in similar works from that time, the same ugly, uncharismatic bandits with idiotic lines.”

“99% of these westerns from the past are just trash, of course. The action is primitive, often with zero cinematography, no damage from gunshots, absolutely invulnerable main characters… In short, there`s nothing particularly interesting in the film, apart from that one track from Kill Bill, and the good main actors. Lee Van Cleef, who starred in pretty much the only good western of that era among similar pieces of crap — `The Good, the Bad and the Ugly`. And the main actor looks like a copy of Eastwood from that time, just young and less masculine, although for that era, `less masculine` meant roughly 100 times more masculine than the average actor today.”

“In short, I`ve once again become convinced that watching westerns from the 60s-80s is purely a lottery, searching not for a piece of gold or even silver, but at least just copper, in a huuuge pile of talentless garbage that was churned out like carbon copies. I can`t help but once again single out the legendary western that stands apart from all these trashy copies of Leone`s westerns (even though 2 out of 3 films in his trilogy are garbage garbage). This is, of course, the greatest western of all time — `Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid`.”

“It`s impossible to describe in words the difference in quality between that film and Leone`s creations and his imitators. A 1969 film that was ahead of its time by at least 15-20 years, both in terms of filming quality and directing. With an incredibly captivating story, phenomenal on-location shooting, and ultra-charismatic protagonists. And some segments of this film haven`t been surpassed by anyone to this day, even after 50+ years. The chase segment, for example, is arguably the best 20 minutes of cinema in my life.”

As for the subject [Death Rides a Horse] — 4 out of 10, only because of the main actors 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻. Primitive, boring, talentless.
