As Pixar has been very open lately to the idea of sequels for some of its most beloved and popular projects, with the release this week of Toy Story 5, The Incredibles 3, and Coco 2 in the works, and Inside Out 2 recently taking the box office by storm, one wonders if we will ever get the chance to return to the streets of Paris for a Ratatouille sequel.
This is precisely the situation Patton Oswalt, known for voicing Remy the rat in the animated film, discussed in an interview with The Daily Beast. He said he would love to make a Ratatouille 2, but only if it wasn’t just for the money.
“Obviously, I’d love for there to be a Ratatouille sequel… if [director Brad Bird] has an idea, that’s the one I wanna do. I don’t want to be the one saying, ‘Hey, what if Remy did this?’ I want it to be one of those ideas that comes up and you can’t get away from it. I don’t want it to be us saying, ‘Okay, let’s get out our notepads and come up with a sequel.'”
“There are a lot of films that are made like that, and it always feels a bit artificial. I want the sequel to not be the same kind of film, but to have that same energy as Terminator 2 or Aliens, which is to say there is a continuation of the story that we really need to tell… It’s not just about money. And yes, by the way, we love money, and we’re gonna take advantage of it, but we’re gonna earn it by telling an incredible story with completely new dimensions that we didn’t even know before.”
Ratatouille was released in 2007 and is one of the few films from the animation studio that has not had a sequel. In fact, aside from ‘A Bug’s Life’, it is Pixar’s oldest film to not have a sequel, even though ‘Wall-E’ and ‘Up’ fall into a similar category, their releases having taken place one and two years later, respectively. Would you go see a ‘Ratatouille’ sequel?
