Rishabh Pant Sidelined by Finger Injury on Day 2 of Lord’s Test

India`s dynamic wicketkeeper-batsman, Rishabh Pant, was conspicuous by his absence on the field at the start of Day 2 of the ongoing Test match at Lord`s. This follows an injury sustained on the opening day, with discomfort in his left index finger preventing him from taking his usual position behind the stumps. Dhruv Jurel assumed wicketkeeping duties as a substitute fielder.

The injury incident occurred during Day 1 when Pant attempted to stop a delivery from Jasprit Bumrah that had strayed down the leg side during the 34th over. While diving to cut off the ball, the tip of his left index finger made contact, resulting in immediate discomfort. On-field treatment by the team physio, including pain-relief sprays, proved insufficient, leading to Pant requesting a substitution and leaving the field at the end of the over.

Upon arriving at the ground on the second morning, Pant underwent a series of drills with assistant coach Sitanshu Kotak. Despite the attempt, he appeared visibly uncomfortable. A subsequent observation noted him practicing defensive batting strokes using only his bottom (right) hand, a clear indication of the hindrance caused by the injured finger, before he ultimately returned to the pavilion, confirming his inability to participate in fielding.

According to a media release issued by the BCCI, Pant remains under medical supervision. At the time of the release, scans had not been conducted, suggesting that a fracture was not considered likely based on the initial assessment. While fielding remains off the table for the moment, hopes within the Indian camp persist regarding his availability to bat.

Crucially, as this injury is classified as an external injury sustained while on the field of play, regulations permit Pant to bat at his designated position, typically No. 5, should he be deemed fit enough. Pant has been a vital contributor with the bat throughout this series, delivering significant performances including two centuries and a half-century in his four innings thus far. His potential availability with the bat remains a key factor for India`s innings.
