Rory McIlroy began his Players Championship campaign with a round of 74, openly admitting to experiencing “discomfort” in his back. Despite this, the defending champion found some solace in limiting the damage on a day where he felt “unbelievably rusty,” having had minimal preparation due to his recent withdrawal from the Arnold Palmer Invitational. McIlroy, who struggled with errant tee shots, expressed optimism that continued physiotherapy would allow him to attack the TPC Sawgrass course more aggressively in the coming rounds, noting that the softened conditions didn’t lead to as many low scores as expected in the afternoon wave.
In stark contrast, Shane Lowry endured a nightmare finish to his opening round, carding a disastrous quadruple bogey eight on the par-4 18th hole, which led to a disappointing score of 76. The Irishman had been in strong form, two-under-par and bogey-free through 13 holes. However, his round unraveled with a missed par putt on the 14th, a double-bogey on the 15th, and ultimately two costly visits to the water on the final hole. This unfortunate end continues a recent trend of late-round struggles for Lowry, following similar issues at the Cognizant Classic and the Arnold Palmer Invitational.
The first round, interrupted by a brief thunderstorm that softened the course, saw a tight leaderboard. Five players were tied for the lead at five-under-par, with Austin Smotherman having a chance to claim the outright lead with a birdie putt on his final hole. Prominent contenders like Justin Thomas, Russell Henley, Taylor Moore, and Cameron Young were just a shot back. Earlier in the day, Collin Morikawa was forced to withdraw due to a back injury sustained during a practice swing on the 11th tee.
World number one Scottie Scheffler posted an even-par 72, acknowledging that his driving was “not sharp,” finding only seven fairways. Scheffler, who is aiming for his third Players Championship title, was seen practicing on the range in the rain, actively trying a different driver to improve his tee shots. Despite a birdie on his final hole, he expressed frustration over bogeys on the 16th and 17th. Fellow Irishman Séamus Power also suffered a difficult end to his round, bogeying the 16th (his seventh hole) and taking a costly seven on the par-five ninth after finding a greenside bunker.
