Rostelecom is reportedly reviving plans to create its own digital video game store. Reports suggest the project is focused on the Russian market, with a particular emphasis on games adapted for the domestic Aurora operating system. Sources indicate the store will feature games from Russian studios, some already being adapted for tablets running Aurora, which are available in retail.
The initiative is being compared to VK Play, although its current functionality is reportedly less developed. A key technical hurdle identified is the limited availability of modern graphics engines compatible with Aurora. Market experts suggest that Rostelecom`s prior attempts in 2015 and 2019 could provide valuable experience to avoid past errors. Notably, in 2019, the company developed the “Game Market” platform in partnership with Buka.
The upcoming marketplace might be integrated with a gaming console from FPlus, unveiled in June at the “CIPR 2025” forum. The console runs on the Aurora OS, and FPlus representatives stated they are currently adapting the OS for the console and are in talks with the store developers. Despite these developments, market participants remain cautious regarding the project`s prospects, citing challenges in attracting users to domestic platforms and limited interest in local content amidst Steam`s overwhelming dominance.
