Rudy Project Nytron Helmet & Astral Sphere Glasses Review

As the seasons shift towards longer, warmer days in the Northern Hemisphere, it’s an opportune moment to update your cycling gear. This review focuses on two essential items for summer rides: the Rudy Project Nytron aero helmet and the Astral Sphere sunglasses.

Reflecting on previous gear, I found the Rudy Project Rebel helmet and Astral X Super-Lightweight glasses performed admirably during the 2025 summer. Rudy Project recently introduced the Performance 40, a contemporary take on their classic 80s wrap-around design. While an exclusive €950 3D-printed titanium version was out of reach, Rudy Project kindly offered the Astral Sphere glasses and Nytron helmet for review.

Unboxing these new items was a pleasant surprise; the ice-white Nytron helmet paired with gloss white Astral Sphere frames and striking purple lenses immediately evoked a “wow!” moment. The aesthetic appeal was undeniable, prompting the question of their functional performance.

Rudy Project Nytron White Matte Helmet: Rider Impressions

The Rudy Project Nytron helmet offered an exceptional fit straight out of the box, a rare and welcome experience. As an aero helmet, its design is sleek and non-bulky, providing a comfortable, secure embrace around the head. Initial rides revealed a noticeable, yet reassuring, presence due to extensive internal padding. While lacking MIPS, the Nytron is EN 1078 certified and passed WG11 rotational impact tests, validating its safety credentials. Remarkably, within about thirty minutes, the helmet’s presence became unnoticeable.

Despite its aero design, the Nytron incorporates large, strategically placed ventilation channels. Air enters through prominent front and side openings, circulates over the head, and exits at the rear. Concerns about overheating in 25-30ºC conditions proved unfounded, though performance in 40ºC heat remains to be tested. While objective aerodynamic data wasn’t available, the helmet didn’t feel like it impeded speed. A practical feature is the ability to securely store sunglasses in the front vents, a thoughtful addition for varying light conditions.

The helmet features ample, yet slim and non-bulky, internal padding designed for sweat absorption and vibration dampening. A thin black band extending from the temples to a rear tension adjuster secures the helmet. This silver dial tensioner, mounted on a Y-shaped band with a head-conforming section, allows for vertical adjustment to optimize fit and comfort. The light grey straps, ear adjusters, and black buckle complete the retention system, offering straightforward adjustability.

Positioned as Rudy Project’s aero race helmet, endorsed by the Bahrain Victorious WorldTour team, the Nytron seamlessly blends high-performance aesthetics with casual style. During rides, it remains remarkably stable, preventing any unwanted movement. Its compact profile, subtle grey/silver “Rudy Project” branding, and a weight of just over 250 grams make it competitive with other high-end helmets, yet it’s offered at a more accessible price point. Delivered with a protective bag, the Nytron helmet embodies comfort, safety, and distinctive Italian flair.

The Nytron helmet is available in two unisex sizes: Small/Medium (55-58cm) and Large/XL (59-61cm), and comes in a selection of nine colors.

Rudy Project Astral Sphere White Gloss – ImpactX 2 Laser Purple Glasses: Rider Impressions

The combination of white-framed Astral Sphere sunglasses with a matching white Nytron helmet exudes undeniable style. My review pair featured ImpactX 2 Laser purple photochromic lenses, contributing to a strikingly sharp overall appearance.

The Astral Sphere’s design is more of a single-piece lens connected to arms and a nosepiece rather than a traditional frame. Its detachable nosepiece features highly adjustable soft rubber pads for a customized, secure fit. The arms incorporate rubber inserts for enhanced grip and softer ends for comfort. The spherical lens shape is crucial for superior peripheral vision, and as Rudy Project notes, its curvature minimizes optical distortion while boosting depth perception and spatial awareness—benefits I found translated into remarkably clear vision with no intrusive light leakage from any angle.

The lenses are arguably the most critical component, and the Astral Sphere offers both photochromic and polarized options. My ImpactX Photochromic purple lenses adapted seamlessly to varying light conditions, delivering consistently clear and sharp visuals. A notable advantage was their resistance to fogging, even when transitioning between cool outdoor temperatures and a warm indoor environment.

The Astral Sphere glasses impress with their robust construction, particularly the firm “clunk” of their hinges. They offer excellent comfort and visual appeal. Compatibility with helmets is key for cycling eyewear, and the Astral Sphere integrated flawlessly with the Nytron helmet. The glasses are supplied with a soft pouch and a durable hard case, crafted from 75% pre-consumer recycled leather with reduced plastic—an eco-conscious detail ensuring maximum protection during travel.

The Rudy Project Astral Sphere glasses are offered in nine distinct color combinations.
