Russian Grandmaster Ian Nepomniachtchi Joins Aurora Gaming

Aurora Gaming has announced the signing of Russian chess grandmaster Ian Nepomniachtchi. The organization shared the news through their social media channels, marking a significant addition to their roster.

Nepomniachtchi expressed his excitement about the partnership, stating, “With chess potentially becoming a full-fledged esports discipline after its inclusion in the EWC program, I hope this new, engaging format will attract a wider audience. As a long-time gaming enthusiast and avid esports follower, I’m thrilled to join Aurora Gaming, a recognizable and ambitious project.”

Currently, Nepomniachtchi holds the ninth position in the FIDE rankings, surpassing other notable players such as Ding Liren from LGD Gaming (17th), Wesley So, and Alexander Bortnikov from Natus Vincere (11th and 166th, respectively). The top spot in the rankings belongs to Magnus Carlsen, who is signed with Team Liquid.

The inclusion of chess in the competitive program of the Esports World Cup 2025 has further solidified its place in the esports landscape. The championship, scheduled to take place in Saudi Arabia from July 31 to August 3, will feature 16 participants competing for a prize pool of $1.5 million.
