Ryan Giggs’ Manchester Restaurant Unexpectedly Closes Its Doors
George’s Dining Room and Bar, co-owned by former Manchester United midfielder Ryan Giggs, has reportedly ceased operations without warning in Worsley, Manchester. Staff members were allegedly notified of their termination via text message on Thursday.
The 51-year-old ex-footballer established the venue on Barton Road in 2014 alongside two childhood friends. On Friday evening, notices posted on the restaurant’s entrance stated it was closed for the weekend due to “unforeseen circumstances”.
However, text messages sent to employees by management reportedly indicated that the establishment has permanently closed. The messages cited “significant declines in business coupled with substantial increases in operational costs and the ongoing cost-of-living crisis” as reasons for the closure.
Staff were reportedly informed that they would receive any outstanding wages “in due course”, along with notice pay and redundancy compensation where applicable. One employee expressed shock at the sudden announcement, stating they had all been scheduled to work that day before receiving the text messages.
When George’s opened over a decade ago, Giggs described it as a lifelong ambition to own a restaurant with his childhood friends Kelvin Gregory and Bernie Taylor. He had characterized it as a “unique offering for the area”, with a launch event attended by former Manchester United teammates.
Giggs has also collaborated with Sky Sports commentator Gary Neville on the GG Hospitality Group, which launched Hotel Football at Old Trafford and the Stock Exchange Hotel in Manchester city center.
In other news, Giggs has recently taken on a more active role with Salford City FC, the League Two club he co-owns with former Manchester United teammates. He has been spotted in the dugout alongside manager Karl Robinson during matches, lending his coaching experience to the staff at Moor Lane.
