Celtic’s 21-year-old Scottish midfielder, Maria McAneny, has been officially recognized by Guinness World Records for scoring the fastest goal in women’s football history. Her remarkable strike took just 4.10 seconds to find the net. This historic moment occurred on December 22, 2025, during a Scottish Women’s Premier League match against reigning champions Hibernian.
The record-breaking goal came straight from the kickoff. McAneny launched a powerful shot from midfield that soared over the goalkeeper, leaving the opposing team utterly stunned. Celtic went on to win the match with a final score of 2-1.
Guinness World Records confirmed the goal as the fastest in professional women’s football this week, bestowing the prestigious distinction upon McAneny. She revealed that the shot wasn’t a result of specific training, describing it as “just a spur of the moment thing.”
“There was a Plan B, but I told Saoirse I was going for it, and luckily it went in,” McAneny shared. “It’s an amazing feeling, and definitely not an accomplishment I ever thought I’d have. It hasn’t really sunk in yet, to be fair.”
Maria McAneny has been a significant contributor for Celtic, netting 13 goals and providing five assists this season. She has also earned international call-ups for Scotland and is set to feature in next month’s FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Belgium.
