Shigeru Miyamoto Dispels Hopes for a Super Smash Bros. Movie

Following the announcement of Fox McCloud’s appearance in the recent Mario animated film, fans have been speculating extensively about Nintendo’s reasons for such a crossover. Questions arose: Is a new Star Fox game in development? Could a Star Fox spin-off movie be on the horizon? Or perhaps, given the numerous crossovers from other Nintendo franchises within the film, is this paving the way for a Super Smash Bros. cinematic adaptation?

While we don’t have definitive answers to all these questions, one possibility now seems off the table. Shigeru Miyamoto, the legendary creator of Mario, was recently interviewed and asked about the potential for a Super Smash Bros. film. Fans hoping for such an adaptation will likely be disappointed by his response:

“Right off the bat, I’d say that unlike something such as Super Smash Bros., I don’t think you’ll have a situation where all Nintendo characters would join together. As you know, my rule is that Pikmin can appear in any [Nintendo] series.”

While this is certainly a letdown for many, it doesn’t mean the end of cameos in future Mario films. On the contrary, Miyamoto all but confirmed that more are to come:

“As we worked on this film, I realized again how varied and multi-talented the Mario cast is. When we received ideas from Illumination like, ‘What about this character? What about that character?’, I thought, ‘Oh yes, that’s right. We had this. Oh yes, that’s right. We had that character.’ So it really reaffirmed the diverse nature of the characters in the Mario universe. We have many characters to create a film, and yet we wanted to add a bit of spice, some secret cameos here and there. And you will see that there is a secret character who plays an important role. So I think there could potentially be character introductions like that in the future, something like that.”

What are your thoughts on this? Is it a good or bad thing that a Super Smash Bros. movie adaptation isn’t happening?

(Well… no Smash Bros. movie then.)
