Sir Alex Ferguson has encouraged Manchester United to “take advantage” of the opportunity to construct a new stadium instead of remaining at Old Trafford.
On Tuesday, Manchester United announced plans for a state-of-the-art new stadium near Old Trafford.

The stadium, projected to be finished within five years, is estimated to cost £2 billion and accommodate 100,000 spectators.
This would make it the largest stadium in the United Kingdom, exceeding Wembley Stadium’s capacity.
While acknowledging the sentimental attachment to Old Trafford, Manchester United’s home for 115 years, legendary manager Ferguson considers the move to be highly beneficial for the club.
He stated: “Manchester United should always aim for the best in all aspects, both on and off the field, including the stadium we play in. Old Trafford holds many cherished memories for me personally.”
“However, we must be bold and embrace this chance to construct a new home, suitable for the future, where new history can be created.”
Architects at Foster and Partners have revealed that the stadium design will include an umbrella-like structure and a new public plaza twice the size of Trafalgar Square.
Three imposing towers, inspired by Manchester United’s trident emblem, will define the skyline and support a sweeping canopy covering the stadium and its surrounding area.
The Premier League club will finance the stadium, while the UK government will support the development of the surrounding park area.
Co-owner Ratcliffe commented: “Today signifies the beginning of an incredibly exciting journey towards delivering what will be the world’s greatest football stadium, at the heart of a revitalized Old Trafford.”
“Our current stadium has served us exceptionally well for 115 years, but it now lags behind the leading venues in global sport.”
“By building adjacent to the existing site, we can maintain the essence of Old Trafford while developing a truly state-of-the-art stadium that elevates the fan experience, just steps from our historic ground.”
