Slay the Spire 2: Developers Explain Early Access Patching Methodology

Slay the Spire 2 proved an instant hit upon its early access launch. However, as is common with games at this stage of development, considerable work remains, highlighted by the release of the game’s first beta patch, which certainly won’t be its last.

This initial major balance patch, notably aimed at removing ‘infinite builds,’ sparked significant controversy, leading to a wave of criticism for the game. In response, MegaCrit, the game’s developer, issued a social media statement to clarify its approach to patching:

“As we have many new players who weren’t around during StS1’s early access phase and players who are new to early access games in general, we wanted to explain a bit about our patching methodology. We make changes based on a mix of player feedback, collected metrics, and our own design philosophy. While we do look at feedback across many platforms, the feedback we receive via the in-game reporter from players testing the live patch is most useful to us.

This beta balance pass was the first of many to come over the next 1-2 years. The game will undergo constant changes with the ultimate goal of making it as balanced an experience as StS1 has become. This progression will not be linear, and no change is necessarily permanent. The beta branch will see the most experimental changes and will be refined each time until we feel it’s stable enough for the main branch. Participation in this process is optional but very helpful. Thank you for your patience as we slowly mold StS2 into its final form!”

It’s worth noting that accessing beta branch patches may require players to adjust their Steam settings for Slay the Spire 2. MegaCrit emphasizes that these patches will not be reversed simply because a favored build has been weakened. With Slay the Spire 2 having a long development cycle ahead before its full release, MegaCrit’s objective is clear: to prevent players from discovering optimal strategies too quickly and becoming bored prematurely.
