Irish golfer Seamus Power began his Valspar Championship campaign at Innisbrook with a challenging one-over 72. Despite showcasing his renowned short game, which helped him save par four times in his initial seven holes on the demanding Copperhead course, Power struggled to maintain momentum. After a promising run of three consecutive birdies from his eighth hole, including a remarkable bunker shot for birdie on the 18th, he faltered over his final eight holes, finishing three-over and trailing leader Sungjae Im by eight shots. His primary objective for the season is securing a spot in the FedExCup’s top 100 for next season’s exemption, but finding only eight greens in regulation during the opening round puts him in a precarious position regarding the cut. A streak of three bogeys from the second hole pushed him above par, and although he birdied the par-five fifth, another bogey on the seventh was followed by a crucial six-foot par save on the final hole.
Sungjae Im Leads Valspar with Stellar Performance
In stark contrast, South Korea’s Sungjae Im delivered an exceptional performance, carding a seven-under 64. His round included two eagles and six birdies, placing him one shot ahead of veteran Brandt Snedeker, 45, at the top of the leaderboard.

Elsewhere, Irish golfers enjoyed a more successful day at the HotelPlanner Tour’s DP World PGTI Open held near New Delhi. Conor Purcell posted a flawless five-under 67, tying for fourth place and just one shot off the lead. Gary Hurley also performed well with a 68, putting him in a tie for eighth, while another Irish golfer named Power secured a 69, sharing 17th position.

Southern Guards Command LIV Golf South Africa Team Leaderboard
The Southern Guards lived up to their billing as local favorites, seizing control of the team leaderboard after the opening round of LIV Golf South Africa at The Club at Steyn City. Individually, Bryson DeChambeau and Charles Howell III both shot eight-under 63s to lead by one stroke over Sergio Garcia and local star Branden Grace. With contributions from Charl Schwartzel (66), Dean Burmester (67), and Louis Oosthuizen (69) alongside Grace’s 64, the Southern Guards established a one-shot lead over Smash GC, comprising Talor Gooch (65), Jason Kokrak (66), Harold Varner III (66), and Graeme McDowell (70). Tom McKibbin finished with a 68, placing him tied for 29th, with his team, Legion XIII, trailing by only three shots.
