Team Liquid Recruits World’s Best Chess Player Magnus Carlsen

In a surprising move, esports organization Team Liquid has announced the signing of chess prodigy Magnus Carlsen. The news was shared through the club’s social media channels, marking a significant crossover between traditional chess and the world of esports.

Carlsen has dominated the chess world for the past decade, holding the World Chess Champion title from 2013 to 2022. Although he chose not to defend his title in 2023, Carlsen still maintains his position at the top of the FIDE rankings. His expertise will be put to the test as he represents Team Liquid in the chess tournament at the Esports World Cup 2025.

The championship is scheduled to take place in Saudi Arabia, commencing on July 31. The chess tournament will feature a prize pool of $1.5 million, with 16 players competing for the top spot. Other esports organizations have also ventured into chess, with Team Vitality signing grandmaster Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (ranked 22nd by FIDE) and LGD Gaming recruiting grandmaster Ding Liren (ranked 17th).
