While these are crucial early steps in the pre-production process, the most critical—and often most challenging—hurdle is securing the essential funding needed to bring the vision to the screen. Oliver Hermanus, director of the musical drama ‘The History of Sound,’ which is set to premiere in Italy this week, knows this well.

He began developing this project shortly before the pandemic, after being captivated by a short story he read during an airplane flight. This demonstrates how external factors, like potential award recognition, can play a significant role in getting even nascent projects off the ground.
