The Witcher 3 Lead Quest Designer’s Concerns About Story Length

During the development of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, lead quest designer Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz had concerns that the chosen storytelling approach might seem too prolonged for players. He shared these thoughts in a recent interview with GamesRadar.

Tomaszkiewicz explained that at the time of the game’s release, few titles had attempted to blend a more linear narrative with an open world. This led to concerns among the writing team that the plot might feel excessively long for such a game. Despite these worries, they decided to take the risk. Ultimately, the studio was satisfied with their decision, and players responded positively to the story. For his next project, The Blood of Dawnwalker, Tomaszkiewicz plans to employ a similar approach, although the game’s overall duration will be shorter.

The Blood of Dawnwalker is a single-player action RPG set in an open world inspired by 14th century Europe, but with vampires. Players will control Cohen, a newly-turned vampire tasked with saving his loved ones. The protagonist will face choices between embracing his new powers or maintaining his humanity, which will impact both the narrative and gameplay. The release date for this upcoming title has not yet been announced.
