Tim Tszyu fulfilled his promise to put a disappointing 2024 behind him, defeating rising American boxer Joey Spencer in Newcastle. This victory marks the first step in Tszyu`s effort to revitalize his boxing career.
Following consecutive defeats to Sebastian Fundora and Bakhram Murtazaliev, Tszyu (25-2, 18 KOs) recognized the crucial importance of his fight against Spencer. The 30-year-old Australian boxer started cautiously but asserted his dominance in a commanding third round. He showcased his signature aggressive yet controlled style, reminiscent of his world title run, effectively utilizing speed, diverse attacks, and power against Spencer.
Tszyu inflicted significant damage on Spencer, starting with jabs, then hooks, and ultimately an uppercut that resulted in a severe cut near Spencer`s right eye. After enduring a barrage of Tszyu`s punches late in the fourth round, Spencer`s father stopped the fight, awarding Tszyu the WBO inter-continental super welterweight title.
`There was definitely pressure. I couldn`t afford a third consecutive loss,` Tszyu admitted. `I hope to show people that even after falling, you can always climb back to the top. Critics will always be present, but I`ve proven myself to the world. I`m back!`
This victory, Tszyu`s first since defending his WBO junior middleweight title against Brian Mendoza in October 2023, maintains his undefeated record on Australian soil. It also extends the Tszyu family`s winning streak in Australia to 51-0.
Tszyu is now focused on another American boxer, former unified welterweight world champion Keith Thurman, who defeated Brock Jarvis in Sydney last month. Thurman and Tszyu were initially scheduled to fight in Las Vegas the previous year, but Thurman withdrew due to a torn bicep.
`Sign the contract, big boy. Sign the contract,` Tszyu playfully challenged when questioned about a potential fight with the 36-year-old Thurman. `If the fans desire it, we can organize a massive event.`
