UEFA Women’s Champions League: Bayern Munich Secure Thrilling 3-2 Victory Over Manchester United at Old Trafford

A dramatic encounter at Old Trafford saw Bayern Munich clinch a 3-2 victory over Manchester United in the first leg of their UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-final tie. Key contributions from Pernille Harder, a childhood fan of Manchester United, and super-sub Momoko Tanikawa ultimately secured the win for the German side.

Bayern established a narrow 3-2 lead against Manchester United in the opening leg of their Champions League quarter-final at Old Trafford. Manchester United twice clawed back to equalize after Harder’s well-taken goals, but Tanikawa sealed the win for Bayern with a decisive late strike.

The visitors enjoyed a dream start, opening the scoring within the first 90 seconds. Pernille Harder reacted quickest to Arianna Caruso’s long pass, beating Manchester United captain Maya Le Tissier to the ball before clinically slotting it home. Despite having spoken pre-match about her childhood affection for Manchester United, the 33-year-old Dane showed no sentimentality on the iconic Old Trafford pitch. The experienced striker had already found the net twice in consecutive Frauen-Bundesliga games leading up to the Champions League fixture.

Manchester United, making their Champions League debut, had their first two chances through former Bayern Munich defensive midfielder Julia Zigiotti Olme. Midway through the half, another ex-Bayern player played a crucial role in the host’s equalizer. Glódís Perla Viggósdóttir was penalized for handball following a cross from Lea Schüller, allowing Le Tissier to convert the resulting penalty and level the score. Le Tissier had joined Manchester United from the reigning Frauen-Bundesliga champions in the January transfer window.

The second half initially saw a scarcity of clear-cut opportunities, with only half-chances for Harder and Linda Dallmann before Harder completed her brace, her third in as many games. Japanese substitute Tanikawa, fresh from her Asian Cup triumph, then provided a crucial assist, reminiscent of Caruso’s pass for the first goal.

Remarkably, Harder’s goal tally in this season’s Champions League is only surpassed by Arsenal’s Alessio Russo. However, Manchester United quickly responded within five minutes, as Hanna Lundkvist headed in from a corner delivered by fellow defender Le Tissier, once again drawing level.

In the 84th minute, Bayern regained the lead for the third time. Tanikawa, who had already scored twice in the group stage, unleashed a beautiful curling effort that decisively tipped the tie in favor of the German giants. Bayern ultimately held onto their slender advantage heading into the return fixture.

The reverse fixture will take place at the Allianz Arena on April 1st. Before that, Bayern will face Nürnberg in the Frauen-Bundesliga on Saturday, while Marc Skinner’s Manchester United will compete in a derby against WSL leaders Manchester City.
